31 I Ching insights: Get them.

31 I Ching insights: Get them.

Man, so I finally put together these 31 I Ching insights, and let me tell you, it was a whole thing. Like, a real journey. You know how sometimes you just get this bug in your head, this idea that just won’t leave you alone? That’s what happened to me with the I Ching.

I’d heard bits and pieces about it over the years, usually from folks who were, let’s just say, a bit more… spiritually inclined than I am. But it always kinda piqued my interest, this ancient book that supposedly held all this wisdom. I was going through a period where I felt pretty lost, just sort of drifting, and frankly, a bit annoyed with everything. Nothing felt right, and I kept looking for some kind of anchor, you know?

So, one day, I just decided to dive in. I went and grabbed a few different translations of the I Ching. I figured, if I’m gonna do this, I’m not just gonna read one person’s take. I wanted to see the different angles. I started with the Richard Wilhelm translation, which is like the classic, but then I also picked up a newer one, something a bit more modern, hoping for simpler language. Boy, was I naive.

I started reading, and honestly, for the first few weeks, it felt like I was trying to decipher alien code. It was deep, man. Really deep. All these hexagrams, these lines, the moving lines, the changing lines… I just kept thinking, “What the heck am I even looking at?” It was overwhelming. I’d read a passage, nod my head like I understood, then re-read it five minutes later and realize I’d missed half the point. It was like trying to drink from a firehose.

I tried just reading it cover to cover, but that just wasn’t working. It was too abstract, too much like philosophy class homework. I wasn’t looking for a textbook; I was looking for something I could use. Something practical, something that hit me in the gut and said, “Yeah, that’s it.”

That’s when the idea of “insights” popped into my head. I thought, okay, what if I don’t try to understand every single nuance, but instead, I try to pull out the one, most impactful lesson from each section? What if I could distill this massive amount of text into actionable bits of wisdom that I could actually remember and apply to my own messed-up life?

So, I started from scratch. My process turned into this whole ritual. First, I’d pick a hexagram. Then, I’d read it in all three translations I had. I wouldn’t just read it; I’d chew on it. I’d write down keywords, phrases that stuck out, things that sparked a thought. I used a big notebook, and I just scribbled everything down. No order, just getting it all out.

Next, I’d take a break, let it stew. Maybe go for a walk, do some chores, let my brain work on it in the background. Then I’d come back to those notes, and I’d try to find the core message. Not what it could mean, but what it most clearly seemed to be telling me about how to live, how to deal with situations, how to think about things. This wasn’t about fortune-telling; it was about perspective. It was about finding the wisdom, not predicting the future.

The really tricky part was trying to put it into simple language. The I Ching, it’s just so poetic and ancient. Trying to extract a clear, concise “insight” without losing its essence was a real challenge. Sometimes I’d write something down, and it felt too generic, like something you’d find on a motivational poster. Other times, it was too cryptic, like a riddle. I had to hit that sweet spot.

I went through all 64 hexagrams this way. It took forever. There were days I’d just stare at the page, completely blank. Days I’d feel like I was just making stuff up. There were moments of real frustration when I just wanted to toss the books across the room and say, “Forget it, this is too hard!” But something kept pulling me back. That nagging feeling that there was something real in there, if I just kept digging.

After I had gone through all 64 hexagrams and pulled out what I thought was their main “insight,” I had a massive list. Way more than 31. Then came the next big step: refining, combining, and culling. I realized some insights were similar, just worded differently. Others were good, but maybe not as universally impactful as I wanted. This part felt like pruning a bush – cutting away the excess to make the core stronger and clearer.

I kept re-reading my list, asking myself: “Is this truly an insight? Is it clear? Is it something someone can grasp quickly?” I tried to make them distinct, yet complementary. I wanted them to build on each other, but also stand alone. It was a lot of shifting, deleting, rephrasing. I didn’t actually aim for 31 at first; that number just sort of emerged as I grouped things and found the strongest, most distinct nuggets. It felt right, an organic number rather than a forced one.

When I finally got to the point where I looked at the list of 31 and felt a sense of calm, like, “Okay, this is it. This feels complete,” it was a huge relief. It wasn’t just about finishing a project; it was about feeling like I’d found some clarity for myself too. All that wrestling with ancient texts actually helped me untangle some of my own knots. These aren’t just things I read; they’re things I processed, grappled with, and eventually, just got. And now, I’m finally putting them out there for anyone else who might need a bit of that ancient wisdom, stripped down and ready to use.
