I Ching 59 – Get unstuck with gentle action

I Ching 59 – Get unstuck with gentle action

Man, I was stuck. Like completely, utterly jammed up a few months back. It wasn’t even a complicated problem, which made me feel even dumber. It was just a big home reno project—the kind where you think you can handle all the plumbing and electrical yourself—and everything just ground to a halt.

I was trying to run the new wiring for the kitchen island, and nothing was lining up. The conduit was too tight. The drywall I patched was cracking again. My wife and I were barely talking because the whole living room had become a construction graveyard, and every time I went near the toolbox, I felt this heavy, sinking panic. We were fighting over stupid things like who left the sawdust trail past the tape line. We had two full weekends of just staring at the unfinished subfloor, pushing on things that wouldn’t move, and achieving absolutely nothing. Just brute-forcing the problem with more hours and more effort was making it worse, solidifying the blockage.

I was forcing the issue, and the issue was forcing me to quit.

The Complete Breakdown

I remember this one Saturday morning. The plan was to finally finish sanding the cabinet frames. I got up, grabbed the sander, and realized I couldn’t find the right grit paper. I spent forty minutes tearing apart three different tool chests, kicking around lumber scraps, and only succeeded in making a bigger mess. I lost the sander’s power cord. I tripped over a bucket of screws. I threw the sandpaper roll across the room. I was so mad at the mess, the project, and myself that I walked out, got in the truck, and just drove around for an hour yelling at the steering wheel. That feeling of rigidity, of everything being closed and tight—it was physical.

I Ching 59 – Get unstuck with gentle action

When I got back, I knew I couldn’t touch the kitchen island wiring or the cabinets or the damn floor. I was frozen solid. My brain was a knot of anxiety and confusion. I was sitting there, nursing a terrible cup of instant coffee, trying to figure out which contractor I could afford to call to save me from the absolute disaster I’d created.

The Accidental Turnaround

I wasn’t looking for ancient wisdom, believe me. I was just surfing the web, looking at articles about high-stress professions, trying to feel better that I wasn’t the only guy losing his mind. I stumbled onto this weird idea, not a solution, but a concept. It was about how when everything is too tightly bound, when the community or the situation is completely congested and rigid, the answer isn’t to push harder or try to force unity. The answer, the text basically said, is to gently scatter the energy first.

Dispersion. Dissolution. Getting unstuck by loosening the entire damn structure.

My first thought was, “That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. I need to tighten things up, not scatter them.” But my current approach was obviously a total failure, so I figured, why not try one crazy thing? I decided to apply this idea to the physical mess I was living in.

The Practice of Gentle Action

I completely abandoned the kitchen. I declared a day off from the main project. Instead, I focused on things that had nothing to do with the reno but were contributing to the general chaos and my stress level.

My gentle action process went like this:

  • I spent the entire morning hauling out every single piece of trash, sawdust bag, and old food container from the garage, the living room, and the truck. I didn’t organize tools; I just created space.
  • I fixed the busted screen door on the porch—a job I had been putting off for six months. It took twenty minutes. A quick win, a small dissolution of an old frustration.
  • I spent an hour just cleaning the dust off the windows and the kitchen table with a damp cloth. No tools, no power equipment, just simple, gentle cleaning.

This wasn’t working on the project. This was dispersion. I was scattering the rigid, stuck energy of the main task into small, manageable, unrelated tasks. I was intentionally diverting my focus from the clogged artery to the capillaries, just to get the flow moving again.

By the time the afternoon rolled around, the house was still a mess, but a cleaner mess. The air felt lighter. I wasn’t cursing. I wasn’t fighting the rigid blockage of the wiring. I had dissolved some of the stress through small, gentle victories.

Then, I casually walked back into the kitchen, not to work, but just to grab a screwdriver. I noticed the crooked connection box that had been the main source of the wiring jam. Because I was relaxed and not actively forcing the issue, my mind was loose enough to see the mistake I’d made two weeks prior. The box wasn’t the right size for the wire gauge I was using. I had been forcing a square peg into a round hole, thinking the problem was my hammer or my technique, when the problem was simply the wrong part.

I got the right part the next day. The island wiring went in smooth as butter in under an hour. We were unstuck. Not because I pushed harder, but because I backed off, scattered the immediate stress, and allowed the solution to emerge from the dissolved chaos. That’s the real takeaway: sometimes you need to gently let things fall apart so they can come back together better.
